  1. Sub Rosa Pyrenees Nebbiolo 2015

Mike Bennie, Wine Front: 91/100 "Winemaker Adam Louder of SubRosa has completed 30 harvest/vintages, locally and overseas obviously, and he’s only 35 – dedicated winemaking. Here’s another nebbiolo from Malakoff Vineyard in the Pyrenees – geez I’d love to do a line up of all the Malakoff nebbiolos, must get onto that. This wine spends 28 days on skins, then goes to old oak. Simple stuff. Into bottle with no fining and filtration. About 100 dozen made. Rich scents of ash, dark cherry, game meat, leather straps, anise. Evocative, dense fog of savouriness and fruit. Medium weight, light concentration, savoury flavours, more of the game meat, medicinal cherry fruitiness, fine ropes of suede tannin, finishes with a burst of fresh-feeling acidity and some nice bitterness. Glorious drinking."

  2. Luke Lambert Nebbiolo 2016

"It’s hard to separate this wine from any great nebbiolo’s in the world with its firm, ribbons of tannin, sour cherry acidity, lean, reserved feel and suggestions of earth, tar, char, dried flowers. It’s a beautiful, charismatic drink, structured, complex, lean and intense, with a reserved nature that grows and builds as time and air and space happen around the wine. The tannins are glorious, sticking under gums and yet compact and precise as the wine is sipped on. It’s perfumed as all get out too. A wine celebrating definitive character of the variety, drinkability, reserve and potential – it’s kept off higher praise as it’s length is just shy of full at present. Wonderful wine." 94+ Points, Mike Bennie.

  3. Longview Saturnus Nebbiolo 2014

"Fancy packaging, and this vintage, I reckon the contents are up to scratch too. Cherry and ripe strawberry, aniseed and fresh mint, light spiciness with Nebbiolo’s beautiful signature writ large all over it. Medium bodied, quiet succulence of cherry, fine dusty tannin drags it along nicely, cool acidity, and a red fruited, tea and new leather aftertaste. Hats off. They’ve got this one just right." 93 Points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front.

  4. Unico Zelo Excarpos Nebbiolo 2016

Interesting label design. Slightly creepy, but bold and striking. Twitchy levels of volatility here, but that often comes with the territory. Poached strawberry, cherry, fennel, walnuts, dried flowers. Full flavour, toffee apple, stewed red fruits, but savoury at the same time, with nutty flavours and leather in the mix. Tannin is nicely done, a light brick dust coating, and a solid finish. It’s a very interesting wine. Quite like it for its points of difference. The Wine Front.

  6. Domenica Nebbiolo 2015

The single acre of nebbiolo is grown in a cool, protected southerly pocket on the corner of shale at the southern end off the property. This soil holds more water than the granite, allowing the typically large canopy to maintain its integrity throughout the summer, usually without supplementary irrigation. Tiny yields of three or four bunches per vine develop the intensity of fruit required to make nebbiolo with beautiful structure, and a deep complex core of ripe fruit.

  7. Tonic Nebbiolo 2017

"There’s a little bit of Valtellina here with its scent of cool alpine herbs, mint and spice, dried roses, sour and sweet red cherries. Light and frisky, a Campari bitterness, blood orange flavour and tang, a little poached strawberry, vermouth sweetness, fine dusty tannin, and a cool dusty and spicy finish. It’s a wine of individual character and style. Pass the tajarin on the left hand side."92 Points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front.

  8. Massolino Barolo Docg 2014

"From a selection of vineyards in Serralunga, aged for 24 months in large Slavonian oak casks. It sings with bright, cherry fruits and super-dry savoury tannins. It opens with pretty red berries and closes with firm but powdery grip.  Complex, bright, light but firm, fresh but savoury and longto boot. Yippee.

  10. Massimo Rivetti Langhe Nebbiolo Avene 2014

93 points Huon Hooke, HuonHooke.com, 26/9/2017, "Medium to deep red colour with a tint of purple; the bouquet is about dried herbs, flowers and mossy, leaf-litter nuances. The wine is full-bodied and firm, with a good harmony of firm tannin backbone as well as fruit. The classic savouriness of nebbiolo is there in abundance, but there is also a very good depth of raspberry, red cherry and cherry eau-de-vie fruit. Lovely wine and good value." Importer's Notes: The fruit for this wine is sourced from an "heroic" vineyard which, in places, has a 30% slope!! 100% Nebbiolo, aged for 12 months in 2500lt Slavonian oak botte (large barrels). The 2014 vintage was a cool one in the Langhe, wet at times, but saved with a late burst of warm and dry weather around harvest. It was not ideal for varieties like Dolcetto and Barbera, but because Nebbiolo has a long hang time and is the last variety picked, that late turn in the weather led to good quality fruit, particularly from the Barbaresco region. Whilst the Nebbiolo wines of this vintage may not have quite the same intensity of the warmer years, for those wines labelled as Langhe Nebbiolo, this is not a problem - these wines are designed for earlier drinking and, as such, the Massimo Rivetti fits the bill perfectly. Huon Hooke certainly liked the wine!
