  2. Mount Mary Quintet 2014

While there wasn’t a lot of wine made in the Yarra Valley in ‘14 (wind and rain during flowering), some wine of very high quality was made - witness this. Mount Mary has shown over the decades that Quintet develops superbly, and this complex dark berry-flavoured Bordeaux blend will do just that. 97 points. James Halliday

  3. Shobbrook Novello 2015

An exotic blend of 1/3 Nebbiolo, 1/3 Shiraz, 1/3 Grenache and a splash of Muscat to lift the palate.Tom Shobbrook makes this "Didi" range of wines from fruit found in the Basket Ranges of Adelaide Hills and from fruit he sources from the Barossa Valley. Naturally fermented, minimal handling and an eclectic blend of red varieties (and maybe a white variety or two) sees this wine pop on the palate. It's all bright red fruits like cranberry, cherry, raspberry and red apple. Then there's spices, christmas-cake-like spices, and exotic, pretty smoothly focused tannins. So slurpable. Chill it down prior to drinking.

  4. Freeman Corona Corvina Rondinella 2015

Freeman's Notes: "A wine made for la Dolce Vita… It smacks of briar and sun-ripe red berries over an umami savoury frame, that’s invitingly light-bodied and disarmingly mellow. Attractive generous berry flavours and soft persistent tannins combine to create this seductive easy drinking red that isn't intended for cellaring."

  5. Rusden Ripper Creek Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Great weight and concentration, subtle silky tannins and a lovely, well balanced finish.Christian Canute writes, "The Shiraz (80%) for this year’s Ripper Creek ripened quite early in a dry, warm and mild vintage. Yields were below average and the result is a fruit forward, juicy little number that over-delivers as usual. With a touch of barbeque herb rub from the Cabernet (20%) and layers of dark fruits and liquorice on the nose, this years’ Ripper has vibrant dense fruit on the palate, hints of cocoa and vanilla and gentle tannins which provide a lush finish. Drink now or cellar comfortably for 8-12 years."

The Blending of noble varieties to us has always and will continue to offer great potential for complexity and depth of characters. Like blending and matching food the very essence of finding the ideal varietals and blending the right percentage of each variety based on the vintage year brings a style and consistency. 10. Yarra Yering Dry Red No.1 Bordeaux Blend 2014

98 Points, James Halliday's Wine Companion. "A blend of cabernet sauvignon (dominant), merlot, malbec and petit verdot. Fabulous colour, deep crimson; the bouquet is so intense it sets the antennae waving furiously. The palate is an essay. Sheer, unadulterated power; the four components have bonded so symbiotically and synergistically with each other, and the 100% new French oak, it will be a decade at the very least before the wine opens up to display the intricacy of its inner workings. When it does, this wine may emerge as the greatest of the vintage."
