  3. Mr Riggs Battle Axe Sparkling Shiraz Nv

Ben Riggs writes, "Aiming for style and profile, the wine offers luscious layers of spice and dark berry fruits, balanced with a peppery undercurrent. This gloriously full-bodied wine is the first Mr. Riggs Sparkling Shiraz in my Generation Series. Following traditions unique to our region, this sparkling builds its base from mature, developed McLaren Vale Shiraz. It's finished off with a small batch of fortified vintage Shiraz - let's call it the final push from The Iron Lady, the most famous Battle-Axe of them all. I Named this wine after my beautiful mother-in-law, who I call The Battle Axe - in complete jest of course, as she couldn't possibly be more different to her given nickname. The Battle-Axe is a a premium sparkling red - rich and luscious, complex yet balanced. It's also one of the most versatile food wines imaginable, yet confidently flies solo."

  5. Bests Great Western Sparkling Shiraz 2013

94 Points, Gary Walsh, Wine Front, "It’s coming up to XMAS, where we put all our little differences to one side and enjoy ourselves. Or that’s the theory anyway! New livery for this wine, I’m thinking? The colour here is something else; it makes deep purple look insipid. Blackberry and violet, dark boiled XMAS cake, chocolate and leather, with a slightly briny character too. It’s dense and tannic, full of juicy purple flavour, along with raspberries, salt beef and spice. It’s almost more savoury than simply sweet, and has layers of complexity and a full throttle finish rolling with dark chocolate and a thick pillow of tannin. Pretty much, this is how you do it. Almost ready now, but will really be better still in a few years." Best’s Great Western Sparkling Shiraz was re- introduced at Best’s in 2006 after almost 40 years of absence. The sparkling Shiraz style is synonymous with Great Western and has been made in the region since the early 1900s.Best’s Sparkling Shiraz epitomises the regional characteristics with plenty of spice and plummy fruit characters. The base wine is left on yeast lees on bottle for 20 months or more and disgorged in the traditional method. The dosage liqueur for this wine contains a small quantity of very old Best’s Liqueur Muscat that gives the wine an added layer of interest and complements the style.

  6. Spinifex Louis Sparkling Shiraz Nv

A little secret from Spinifex. Tasted of dried herbs and meaty nuances along with ample red/black fruits and loads of powerfully Barossan Shiraz-ness. From the distributor's web page, "From a total of 155 dozen, this is the first disgorgement (50 dozen only) and release of a Spinifex sparkling Shiraz. The base wine was vinified from a gnarly, 1898 vineyard grown in the deep sands of Vine Vale, Barossa. Comprised mostly of the 2005 vintage with small dollops of 2006 and 2007, the wine spent nearly three years in barrel before triage, and went on to spend just under 10 years on lees prior to this first disgorgement. The sweetness has been held to the absolute minimum (approx. 3.5 g/l residual sugar)."
