Mader Pinot Blanc 2017
Mader (Bio-Dynamic): Alsace (Hunawihr): The Mader domaine is a very small quantity, high quality wine producer based in the picture postcard village of Hunawihr in the middle of vineyards on the Route des Vins. The family own 9 hectares of vineyards, including prized holdings of vines in the famous ‘Rosacker’ Grand Cru vineyard and also now in the Grand cru Schlossberg. All vineyard work is carried out by hand and since 2005 their son Jerome is now running the estate having studied and gained a Diploma in Oenology. Since returning to the family estate Jerome has also converted all their vineyards to bio-dynamic viticulture. Rieslings here are some of the few in Alsace produced in a classic fine dry style built to age. In exceptional years a tiny volume of late harvest ‘Vendanges Tardive’ Riesling is made in a similar fine, elegant style that ages superbly. Jerome is fanatical about quality so yields are kept very low and selections for all wines are very strict ensuring the highest quality. The entire range of wines from the Mader family taste true to their grape varieties and vineyard origins and all represent fantatsic value. Andre Kientzler Riesling Osterberg Grand Cru 2012
The Kientzler domaine is a small family-run estate consisting of just 12 hectares of vines, of which 3.7 hectares are classified Grand Cru. Riesling and Gewürztraminer make up about half of the families vineyards and five other varieties also contribute to the Domaines output of approximately 6,000 cases. The families vineyards centre around the three Grand Cru’s which border the village of Ribeauville. ‘Geisberg’ is the smallest of the three facing full south, ‘Kirchberg’ is slightly larger with a warmer south-west facing aspect, and ‘Osterberg’, the largest of the Ribeauville Grand Cru’s which faces east south-east. The average age of the vines here is about 40 years. “One of the most talented Winemakers in Alsace…..he has Riesling and Gewürztraminer growing in prime sites and it is what he manages to do with these that ranks his wines among the very best in Alsace. Although his generic Riesling has great class and finesse, his Grand Cru ‘Geisberg’ and Grand Cru ‘Osterberg’ are very much finer. The ‘Geisberg’ is the riper and more opulent, with a wisp of smokiness to the fruit, the ‘Osterberg’ is more classic and flinty, requiring longer in bottle.”from ‘The Wines of Alsace’ by Tom Stevenson “The Geisberg is immense and rivals with the greatest wines of the world” Les Meilleurs Vins de France 2011$54.99 per bottle
